A/52/PV.81 General Assembly

Monday, March 23, 1998 — Session 52, Meeting 81 — New York — UN Document ↗

In the absence of the President, Mr. Abu-Nimah (Jordan), Vice-President, took the Chair.
The meeting was called to order at 10.10 a.m.

120.  Scale of assessments for the apportionment of the expenses of the United Nations (A/52/785/Add.1)

In a letter contained in document A/52/785/Add.1, the Secretary-General informs the President of the General Assembly that, since the issuance of his communication dated 4 February 1998, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, the Gambia, Qatar, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Turkmenistan have made the necessary payments to reduce their arrears below the amount specified in Article 19 of the Charter. May I take it that the General Assembly duly takes note of this information? It was so decided.

8.  Adoption of the agenda of the fifty-second regular session of the General Assembly and organization of work: request for the reopening of the consideration of agenda item 17 (e) (Appointment of members of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal) Note by the Secretary-General A/52/105/Add.1)

In his note (A/52/105/Add.1), the Secretary-General informs the General Assembly that he has received notification of the death of Mr. Francis Spain (Ireland), member of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal. Accordingly, the General Assembly will be required at its current session to appoint a person to serve for the remainder of Mr. Spain’s term of office, which expires on 31 December 1998. In order to enable the General Assembly to take the required action, it will be necessary to reopen consideration of sub-item (e) of agenda item 17, entitled “Appointment of members of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal”. May I take it that the General Assembly, on the proposal of the Secretary-General, wishes to reopen consideration of sub-item (e) of agenda item 17, entitled “Appointment of members of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal”?
It was so decided.
Members will recall that, at the 4th plenary meeting, on 19 September 1997, the Assembly allocated this sub-item to the Fifth Committee. May I take it that the Assembly again wishes to allocate this sub-item to the Fifth Committee?
The Chairman of the Fifth Committee will be informed of the decision just taken.

17.  Appointments to fill vacancies in subsidiary organs and other appointments (j) Appointment of a member of the Joint Inspection Unit Note by the President of the General Assembly (A/52/111)

As indicated in document A/52/111, in accordance with the procedures described in article 3, paragraph 1, of the statute of the Joint Inspection Unit, having consulted the group concerned – in this case, the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States – and on the basis of the candidates submitted by that Group, as well as through a consultation by secret ballot with the General Assembly, the President requested Colombia to propose a candidate. May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to appoint that candidate?
It was so decided.
May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to conclude its consideration of sub-item (j) of agenda item 17? It was so decided.
The meeting rose at 10.20 a.m.
