The meeting was called to order at 3 p.m.

118.  Appointments to fill vacancies in subsidiary organs and other appointments (g) Appointment of the judges of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal Memorandum of the Secretary-General (A/77/285) Report of the Internal Justice Council (A/77/129/Rev.1)

The Assembly will proceed to the first restricted ballot to fill the remaining vacancy for one full-time judge of the Dispute Tribunal based in Nairobi. This ballot shall be restricted to the two candidates who were not elected but obtained the largest number of votes in the previous ballot, namely, Deepthi Amaratunga (Sri Lanka) and Sean Daniel Wallace (United States of America). This is in accordance with rule 94 of the rules of procedure. Before we begin the voting process, I should like to remind members that pursuant to rule 88 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly, no representative shall interrupt the voting except on a point of order on the actual conduct of the voting. We shall now begin the voting process. Ballot papers will now be distributed. All the candidates whose names appear on the ballot paper are eligible. May I remind delegations that they may vote for eligible candidates in a number not larger than the number indicated in ballot papers. A ballot will be declared invalid if it contains votes for eligible candidates in a number larger than the number indicated in the ballot papers. If a ballot paper contains any notation other than a vote in favour of an eligible candidate, those notations will be disregarded.
At the invitation of the President, Mr. Roethlin (Austria), Mr. Bunnarith (Cambodia), Mrs. Guerra Tamayo (Cuba), Ms. Bondare (Latvia), Mrs. Rajaona (Madagascar) and Mr. Khojimatov (Uzbekistan) acted as tellers.
A vote was taken by secret ballot.
The meeting was suspended at 3.15 p.m. and resumed at 3.25 p.m.
The result of the voting is as follows: Full-time judge (Nairobi): Number of ballot papers: 182 Number of invalid ballots: 0 Number of valid ballots: 182 Abstentions: 2 Number of members present and voting: 180 Required majority: 91 Number of individual votes obtained: Sean Daniel Wallace (United States of America) 96 Deepthi Amaratunga (Sri Lanka) 84 Having obtained the required majority of votes, Sean Daniel Wallace (United States of America) has thus been elected a full-time judge of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal based in Nairobi for a term of office beginning on 1 July 2023 and ending on 30 June 2030 (decision 77/414).
I take this opportunity to extend to those elected the congratulations of the Assembly on their appointment and to thank the tellers for their efforts. May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to conclude its consideration of sub-item (g) of agenda item 118?
