The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the i tom QI ita agenda. Me&eta of the Council have before them the repx t of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Xnterim Force in Lebanon for the period 26 January 1990 to 24 July 1990, which ie oontained in &xuments S/21406 and addendum 1 and corrigendum 1. Wxdwrs of the Council also have the followinq document8 before them: S/21396, letter dated 16 July 1990 from the Permanent Representative of Lebana to the United Nationa addreosed to the Secretary-General5 and S/21411, which contains the text of a draft resolution prepared in the course of the Council’s conaultationo. f should also like to drau the attention of members of the Council to &wuwnt S/21409, which contiine the text of a letter dat%d 25 July 1990 from the Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the United Natione addreseed to the Secretary-General. It ie my underatarlding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft reaalution before it. Unless f hear any objection, I ohall put the draft resolution to the vote now. There being no objection, it is 60 decided. A vote was taken by a show of hand% In favour: Canada, China, Calambia, C&e d’lvoire, Cuba, Ethiopia, Finland, Br ante , Malaya la, Roman ia , Union of Soviet Socialiet Republics, United Kingdom of Grat Britain and Northern Ireland, United Statoa of Americas Yemen, Zaire The PRESEDENTz There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has therefore been adopted unaniiwusly as resolution 659 (1990). As a result of consultations held among metiers of the Security Council, I have been authorized, as President of the Security Council, to nuke the following statement on behalf of the Council: .The ixerbers of the Security Council have noted with appreciation the report of the Secretary-General cm the United Nations Interim I’orce in Lebanon WIFIL) (S/Z1406 and Add.1 and Corr .l) , submitted in conformity w fth resolution 648 (1990) . *They reaffirm their conaPitrPent to the full sovereignty, irdepsndence, territorial integrity and national unity of Lebanon within its internatiaoa’lltg reoognized boundaries. In this context, they assert that any State shall refEain from the threat a use of force against the territorial integrity Or political indepen&nce of any State , or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations. “As the Security Council extends the mandate of UNIFIL for a further I interim period on the basis of resolution 425 (19781, the members of the Council again streee the need for the implewntation of that resolution in all it5 aspects. They expres3 thek appreciation for the continuing ef fore-s Of the Secretary-General and his staff in this regard. They reiterate their full support for the Taif Agreement and for the efforts of the Lebanese Government to extend its authority over all Lebanese terrrtory. ‘The members of the Security Council take this opportunity to commend uNlIlL’8 tioOpe and troopconk.ribuicing comtriee for their eacrifices and commitment to the cause of international peace and security under difficult circumstances.” The security council hers thus concluaed the present stage of it8 consideration of the item on the agenda.
