As this is the first meeting of the Security Council to be held this year, I should like to welcome the new members of the Council: Brazil, Djibouti, New Zealand, Pakistan and Spain. We all look forward with confidence to their participation in the work of the Council, which will be of invaluable assistance in the discharge of the Council‘s enormous responsibilities as it tackles so many challenges. I should like also to express the Council's gratitude to the outgoing members for their important contributions to the Council's work. The representatives of Austria, Belgium, Ecuador, India and Zimbabwe all, in an excellent manner, contributed their talents to the conduct of the business of the Council. EXPRESSION OF THANKS TO THE RETIRING PRESIDENT
I should like also to pay a tribute to my predecessor, Ambassador Gharekhan of India, for the service he rendered as President of the Council during the month of December 1992. I express my deep appreciation to Ambassador Gharekhan for the great diplomatic skill and effectiveness he demonstrated as he guided our work in December. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA The aaenda was adooted. ADMISSION OF NEW MEMBERS LETTER DATED 1 JANUARY 1993 FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL (S/25046)
The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. In a letter dated 1 January 1993 addressed to the Secretary-General, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic submitted the application of his country for membership in the United Nations. That letter has been circulated in document S/25046. Under the provisions of rule 59 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, unless the Council decides otherwise, an application for membership shall be referred by the President of the Council to the Committee on the Admission of New Members. Accordingly, unless I hear a proposal to the contrary, I shall refer the application of the Slovak Republic to the Committee for examination and report. As I hear no objection, it is so decided. I would 'propose that the Committee on the Admission of New Members meet today, 7 January 1993, at 3.30 p.m., in Conference Room 6, to consider the application of the Slovak Republic for membership in the United Nations and report to the Security Council. The date of the subsequent meeting of the Council to consider and to take a decision on the report of the Committee will be set and communicated. to the members later. The Council has thus concluded its consideration of the mattes before it. The meetina rose at 12.40 'P.m.
