S/PV.3185 Security Council
The Security Council will now begin its
consideration of the item on its agenda.
The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding
reached in the course of its prior consultations.
Following consultations among the members, I have been authorized to make
the following statement on behalf of the Security Council.
"The Security Council welcomes the recent efforts to apply fully the
peace accords in El Salvador and acknowledges the sense of reponsibility
and cooperation demonstrated by the Government of El Salvador and the
Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberation National to reach this
objective.
"In this context, the Security Council welcomes the submission of
the report of the Commission on the Truth and of its recommendations
intended to prevent the repetition of the acts of violence committed
during the twelve years of armed confrontation, as well as to create
confidence in the positive changes caused by the peace process and
stimulate national reconciliation.
"The Security Council underlines the need for the parties, in
accordance with the peace accords, to comply with the recommendations
contained in the report of the Commission on the Truth, as well as all
other obligations which remain to be implemented. In addition, it calls
upon Salvadorian society to continue acting with the responsibility which
it has demonstrated througbout this process, in order to contribute to
the consolidation of internal peace and the maintenance of a genuine and
lasting atmosphere of national harmony.
"The Security Council invites the Secretary-General to keep it
informed regarding the implementation of the parties' pending commitments
and reiterates that it will continue to follow closely the evolution of 1
the peace process in El Salvador and stands ready to assist the parties
as appropriate to achieve the successful completion of that process."
The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its
consideration of the item on the agenda.
