Adoption of the agenda

The agenda was adopted.

The situation in Georgia Report of the Secretary-General concerning the situation in Abkhazia, Georgia (S/2000/39)

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. Members of the Council have before them the report of the Secretary-General concerning the situation in Abkhazia, Georgia, document S/2000/39. Members of the Council also have before them document S/2000/56, which contains the text of a draft resolution prepared in the course of the Council’s prior consultations. I should like to draw the attention of the members of the Council to document S/2000/52, which contains the text of a letter dated 26 January 2000 from the Russian Federation, transmitting the decision of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on further measures for the settlement of the conflict in Abkhazia, Georgia. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. If I There being no objection, it is so decided.
A vote was taken by show of hands.
There were 14 votes in favour, none against, no abstentions, with one delegation absent, Jamaica. The draft resolution has been adopted as resolution 1287 (2000). [Subsequently the Permanent Representative of Jamaica indicated that she would have voted in favour had she been present at the time of voting.]
The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda.
