Expression of sympathy to the Russian Federation

At the outset, I should like, on behalf of the Council, to express our deepest sympathy to the Government of the Russian Federation, its people and the families of the bereaved in connection with the tragic death of the crew of the submarine Kursk. Adoption of the agenda
The agenda was adopted.

The situation concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo Letter dated 14 August 2000 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2000/799)

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. Members of the Council have before them a letter dated 14 August 2000 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council, document S/2000/799. Members of the Council also have before them document S/2000/823, which contains the text of a draft resolution prepared in the course of the Council’s prior consultations. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution (S/2000/823) before it. Unless I hear any objection, I shall put the draft resolution to the vote now. There being no objection, it is so decided.
A vote was taken by show of hands.
There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 1316 (2000). The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Security Council will remain seized of the matter.
