The responsibility of the Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security
The Security Council will now resume its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in the course of its prior consultations.
Following consultations among members of the Security Council, I have been authorized to make the following statement on behalf of the Council:
“The Security Council takes note with appreciation of the briefing of Under-Secretary- General Mr. Hans Corell regarding follow-up measures to resolution 1269 (1999) of 19 October 1999.
“The Security Council is deeply concerned by the increase, in many regions of the world, of acts of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The Council reiterates its condemnation of all acts of terrorism, irrespective of motive, wherever and by whomever
committed. It welcomes the efforts of the General Assembly and other organs of the United Nations in the field of combating international terrorism.
“The Security Council calls on all States that have not done so to consider, as a matter of priority, becoming party to the existing anti- terrorism conventions.
“The Security Council reaffirms its resolution 1269 (1999) of 19 October 1999 and calls upon all States to implement its provisions fully and expeditiously.
“The Security Council reiterates its readiness, including on the basis of the relevant reports of the Secretary-General, as provided for in its resolution 1269 (1999) of 19 October 1999, to take necessary steps in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations in order to counter terrorist threats to international peace and security.
“The Security Council will remain seized of this matter.”
This statement will be issued as a document of the Security Council under the symbol S/PRST/2000/38.
The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda.
