Provisional
The meeting was called to order at noon.

Adoption of the agenda

The agenda was adopted.

The situation between Eritrea and Ethiopia

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. I should like to draw the attention of the members of the Council to document S/2005/723, containing the text of a letter dated 16 November 2005 from the representative of Japan addressed to the President of the Security Council. Members also have before them document S/2005/732, which contains the text of a draft resolution prepared in the course of the Council’s prior consultations. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. Unless I hear any objection, I shall now put the draft resolution to the vote. There being no objection, it is so decided.
A vote was taken by show of hands.
There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 1640 (2005). The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda.
The meeting rose at 12.05 p.m.
