S/PV.9597 Security Council

Monday, April 8, 2024 — Session 79, Meeting 9597 — New York — UN Document ↗

Provisional
The meeting was called to order at noon.

Adoption of the agenda

The agenda was adopted.

Admission of new members Letter dated 3 April 2024 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2024/286).

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. In a letter dated 2 April 2024 addressed to the Secretary-General, the Permanent Observer of the Observer State of Palestine referred to the application of the State of Palestine for membership in the United Nations, contained in document S/2011/592, dated 23 September 2011, and requested that renewed consideration be given to that application by the Security Council during the month of April 2024. That letter has been circulated in document S/2024/286. Under the provisions of rule 59 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, unless the Council decides otherwise, an application for membership shall be referred by the President of the Council to the Committee on the Admission of New Members. Accordingly, unless I hear a proposal to the contrary, I shall refer to the Committee on the Admission of New Members the request that renewed consideration be given to the application of the Observer State of Palestine during the month of April 2024. As I see no objection, it is so decided. I would propose that the Committee on the Admission of New Members meet today at 3 p.m. in Conference Room 7 to consider the application of Palestine for membership in the United Nations.
The meeting rose at 12.05 p.m.
