Resolution 1677 (2006)
Adopted by the Security Council at its 5436th meeting, on
12 May 2006
The Security Council,
Recalling its relevant resolutions on the situation in Timor-Leste, in particular
its resolution 1599 (2005) of 28 April 2005,
Expressing its deep concern over the 28/29 April incidents as well as the
ensuing situation, and acknowledging the actions of the Government of Timor-Leste
to establish an investigation into the incidents, their effects and causes,
Remaining fully committed to the promotion of long-lasting stability in Timor-Leste,
1. Decides to extend the mandate of the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) until 20 June 2006;
2. Requests the Secretary-General to provide the Council by 6 June 2006
with an update on the situation in Timor-Leste and the role of the United Nations in
Timor-Leste following the expiration of the mandate of UNOTIL with a view to
taking further action on the subject;
3. Encourages the Government and other State institutions of Timor-Leste,
with the assistance from UNOTIL within its current mandate, to address the causes
of the violence in order to prevent a recurrence of such incidents;
4. Decides to remain actively seized of the matter.
