Regatding the decision just acbpted by the Assembly, the
President has requested that I convey his appreciation for the confidence and trust
the Assembly has placed in him by inviting him to participate actively in the
preparations for the special session. I am informed that the President intends to
commence the appropriate consultations on the basis of this decision in the near
fu ture.

As a result of the adoption of this decis ion, an intergovernmeiltal prepara tory
Committee of the Whole has been established to make the necessary preparations for
the special session. As indicated in paragraph 9 of the annex to the decision, the
Preparatory Committee is to hold an organizational session early this month to
elect its Bureau. The time and place of that session will be announced in the
Journal.

Also in paragraph 16 of part X of its repo.:t (A/43/915 Md.9) I the Second
Comi ttee reCOlllllends to the General As~embly the adoption of draft decis ion U,
which concerns the biennial programme of work for the second Committee for
1989-1990.
The Second Committee appr~ved the draft programme of work for the Second
Committee for 1989-1990. May I take it that the Assembly wishes to do the same?

PRO~AMME OF WORK
I should like to inform menbers that, barring unforeseen
developments, the General Assembly will hold a plenary meeting an 18 April 1989 in
order to take up agenda item 15 (c), enti tled "Election of a merrber of the
International Court of Justice".
