A/64/PV.119 General Assembly

Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 — Session 64, Meeting 119 — New York — UN Document ↗

I have the honour to refer to item 18 on the agenda of the sixty-fourth session of the General Assembly, entitled “The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan”, and to draft resolution A/64/L.57, entitled “Observance of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan”. I have the privilege to inform the delegations of the States Members of the United Nations that, as a result of intensive consultations with the parties concerned, the co-Chairs of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group have announced that, “between late September and mid-October the co-Chairs will return to the region to conduct the field assessment mission to observe the humanitarian situation in the territories. A team of high-level advisers and experts, including representatives from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and others, are expected to accompany the co-Chairs on their mission, which will be the first international mission in these territories since the OSCE fact-finding mission in early 2005”. Proceeding from this understanding and in the spirit of good will, the delegation of Azerbaijan kindly requests the General Assembly to postpone its consideration of the agenda item entitled “The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan” and to defer it to the sixty-fifth session. I take this opportunity to thank all delegations for their time and efforts during the whole period of intensive consultations. My delegation looks forward to continuing to inform all Member States with regard to the results of the aforementioned mission to the concerned territories.
The Assembly has just heard the statement by the representative of Azerbaijan withdrawing draft resolution A/64/L.57 and requesting that consideration of agenda item 18 be deferred to the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly. May I take it that the Assembly decides, as proposed by the representative of Azerbaijan, to defer consideration of the item and to include an item entitled “The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan” in the draft agenda of the sixty-fifth session? It was so decided.
May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to conclude its consideration of agenda item 18? It was so decided.
The meeting rose at 12.40 p.m.
