This meeting of the Council has been convened in response to a request from the representatives of Benin, the Libyan Arab Republic and the United Republic of Tanzania in a letter dated 15 November [S/12230] to convene the Council urgently for consideration of the application of the People’s Republic of Angola for membership in the United Nations. That application was presented on 22 April by the President of the People’s Republic of Angola [S/12064]. The Council considered that application at its 1931st and 1932nd meetings, held on 22 and 23 June. 2. In accordance with rule 59 of .the provisional rules of procedure and unless the Council should decide otherwise, I propose to refer the application of the People’s Republic of Angola to the Committee on the Admission of New Members for its examination and report.
