The security Council will naJ begin its mnsideration of the item on its agenda, After consultations among members of the Recur ity Council, I have been authorized to make the following statement on behalf of the metiers of the Security Council: ‘The Security Council met to&y to consider the report of the Secretary-General of 26 NcNeaber 1916 (S/18480) requestid by Security COUnCil resolution 588 (1986). After amsu;tations, I have been authorized to make the following statement on behalf of the metiers of the Security Council: “*The members of the Security Council t&e note of the report of the Secretary-General (WlS480) and express profowd concern at the serious situation whi& continues to exist between Iran and Iraq. They ceitscate their call for the implementation of Security Council resolutions 582 (1986) and 588 (1986) and for the resolution of the prolonged conflict by peaceful means. They again emfiazize the obligation of &amber States to settle their disputes by peaceful means and, in this cantext, t0 cooperate with the Wcucibl Council. In this regard, the members of the Council urge the Secretary4eneral tn rAntinue with his ef for to and call upon the parties to crj+perate with him. “‘The members of the Security Coirncil ccntinue to deplore the violation of international humanitarian law and other laws of armed conflict. They express their deepening concern over the widening OP the conflict through the escalation of attacks on purely civilian targets, on merchant shipping and oil in.9tallations of the littoral States. They call for respect, in accordance with international law, Eor the territorial integrity of the Stites of the region end for the right of Et ee navigation and konmer.& , as well as for the operation of off-shore installations’.* There being no objection, I understand that the Council approves the issuance I. that presidential statement. The Security Council has thus mncluded the present stige of its consideration of the item on its agenda.
