The inter national CommunitY has learned with great shock and deep regret of the untimely and tragic death of the distinguished President of Pakistan, His Excellency General .., . . ,. Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq. President Eia-ul-Haq was an eminent statesman and a wise leader deeply committed to the cause of peace and the purposes and principles of the United Nations. I am sure I express the feeling of all members of the Council in conveying to the family of President Zia-u.l-Haq, to the families of those who lost their lives 1 with him and to ,the Government and people of Pakistan our deep condolences. . I now invite metiers of the Council to stand and observe 'a minute Qf silence in tribute to his "Fry. . The Security CoUnCil Will . .', --- now begin its ,considera,tion of the item on its agenda. The Security Council is meeting today pursuant to an agreement reached in prior consultations. Members of, the Council have before them documents S/29060 and Add.1, S/20063 and Add.1 and S/20134, which contain the r&ports of the Mi,ssions Dispatched by the Secretary-General to Investigate Allegations of the Use of Chemical Weapons in the Cpnflict between the Islamic Republic of Iran arid Iraq. Members of the Council also have before them document S/20151, which contains the text of a draft resolution submitted'by the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before iti. 'Unless I hear any objection, I shall now put the resolution to the vote. There being no objection, it is so decided. (The President) draft A vote was taken by show of hands. In favour: Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Federal Republic of, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Senegal, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America, Yugoslavia, Za*ia The PRKSIDENT (interpretation from Chinese): There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 620 (1988). The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on the agenda. Before,adjourning the meeting - which may well be the last for this month - I . should like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Council for their co-operation with the President and to express my-appreciation for the spirit of ; goodwill and common purpose which. they unfailingly displayed as we dealtlwith -the complex issues confronting the Council.
