Wnbers of the Council have before them the report of the Secretary$eneral on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force for the period 21 my to 17 Novesber 1988 (S/20276). @tiers of the Council also have before them a draft resolution, contained in document S/20300, which has been prepared in the course of the Council's consultations. It is my understanding on the basis of those consultations that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. Unless any menber wishes to speak, or unless I hear any objection, I shall pit the draft resolution to the vot& withou't delay. There being no'objection it is so decided. There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has therefore been adopted unanimously as resolution 624 (1988). In conneCtiOn.with 'the resolution just adopted on the renmal'of the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, I have been authorized to make the following complementary statement on behalf of the Security Council: OBSERVER "As is kno&n, the report of the Secretary-General on the mited Nations Disengagement Observer Force (S/20276) states, in paragraph 24: 'Despite the present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the SitUatiOn in the Middle East as a whole continues to be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle Fast problem can be readed'. 'That statement of the Secretary-General reflects the view of the Security Council." The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on the agenda.
