As this is the first meeting of the Security Council for the month of,September, I should like to take this opportunity to pay tribute, On behalf of the Council,. to His Excellency Mr. Hocine Djoudi, Permament .Representative of Algeria to,the United Nations, for his service as President of , the Security Council for the month of August 1989. I am sure I speak for all members of the Security Council in expressing deep appreciation to Ambassador Djoudi for the great diplomatic skill , tact and unfailing courtesy with which he conducted the Council's business last month. The Security Council will now resume its consideration of the item on the Council's agenda. The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. Following consultations among members of the Security Council, I have been authorized to make the following statement on behalf of the Cduncil: "The Members of the Security Council, recalling their statement of 15 August 1989, welcome the resumption of the work of the Tripartite High Arab Committee set up to resolve the Lebanese crisis. "In this regard, they once again express to the Tripartite High Committee full support in its efforts to stop the bloodshed and to establish an atmosphere conducive to ensuring security, stability and national 'reconciliation in Lebanon. "They strongly urge respect for the appeal hy the Tripartite High Committee for an immediate and comprehensive cease-fire, the implementation of the security arrangements and the establishment of the necessary conditions for national reconciliation in Lebanon. "The Members of the Security Council express their full support to the Tripartite High Committee in its action to put into effect a plan for the settlement of the Lebanese crisis in all its aspects by guaranteeing the full sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Lebanon. "They welcome the contacts maintained by the Secretary-General of the United Nations since 15 August 1989 with the Members of the Tripartite High Committee and invite him to pursue these contacts and to keep the Council informed." The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on the agenda. The meeting rose at 5.45 p.m. .
