Before we proceed to the adoption of the agenda, let me say that it is a welcome sight to see you all back safely in your seats again. In comparative terms, I am a little disappointed with the audience we have today. However, I suspect we will proceed no less rigorously with the business at hand. I would like to thank you all as well for your co-operation with the President yesterday, who asked me particularly to pass that thanks on to you and to your Ministers. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA The agenda was adopted. _ THE SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST REPORT OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL ON THE UNITED NATIONS DISENGAGEMENT OBSERVER FORCE (8/21950 and Corr.1)

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. Members of the Council have before them the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force for the period 22 May 1990 to 23 November 1990, in document S$/21950 and Corr.1. Members of the Council also have before them a draft resolution, contained in document S$/21972, which has been prepared in the course of the Council's consultations. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. Unless I hear any objection, I shall put the draft resolution to the vote now. There being no objection, it is so decided. A vote was taken by show of hands. In favour: Canada, China, Colombia, Céte d'Ivoire, Cuba, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Malaysia, Romania, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America, Yemen, Zaire

There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has thus been adopted unanimously as resolution 679 (1990). In connection with the resolution just adopted on the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, I have been authorized to make the following complementary statement on behalf of the Security Council: "As is known, the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (S/21950 and Corr.1) states, in paragraph 23: "Despite the present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the situation in the Middle East as a whole continues toe be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached.' "That statement of the Secretary-General reflects the view of the Security Council." The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda. The meeting rose at 11,55 a.m.
