The PRESIDENT (interpretation from French): The Security Council now begin its consideration of the item on its agenua. The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. Members of the Council have before them copies of a letter dated 23 Octoher 1992 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council. been Following consultations among members of the Security Council, I have authorized to make the following statement on behal€ of the Council: "The Security Council has takex note of the letter dated 23 October 1992 concerning the situation in Mozambique addressad to the President of the Council by the Secretary-Seneral. It expresses its gratitude to the Secretary-General cad to his iaterim Special Representative for their efforts to ensure that the United Nationy contributes to the implementation of the General Peace Agreement in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement. "The Council remains deeply concerned by the reports of major violations of the cease-fire in several regions of Mozambique. It calls upon the parties to halt such violations immediately and scrupulously to respect the cease-fire and all the commitments entered into under the General Peace Agreement. It also urges the parties fully to cooperate with the interim Special Representative, and in particular to take all measures necessary to ensure the safety of United Nations staff in Mozambique. "The Council wishes to reiterate its firm commitment to work towards a lasting peace in Mozambique. . Iu this regard, it urges the parties to fully respect the cease-fire which is necessary for the speedy establishment and successtul deployment of the Waited Nations Operation in Mozambique (UNUMOZ)." The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda. The meeting rose at 6.55 p.m.
