The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on the agenda. The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations. Members of the Council have before them documents $/25954 and Addl, which contain the texts of letters dated 15 June 1993 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council. Members of the Council also have before them document $/25955, which contains the text of a draft resolution prepared in the course of the Council's prior consultations. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. Unless I hear any objection, I shall put the draft resolution to the vote now. There being no objection, it is so decided. A vote was taken by show of hands. In favour: Brazil, Cape Verde, China, Djibouti, France, Hungary, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Spain, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Itreland, United States of America, Venezuela

There were 15 votes in favour. The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 842 (1993). (The President) I shall now call on those members of the Council who wish to make statements following the voting. Mr. WALKER (United States of America): My Government was gratified that the Secretary-General endorsed the expansion of the United Nations Protection Force in Macedonia, and we are pleased that the Council has adopted this resolution as expeditiously as it has. My Government's offer of forces for the United Nations contingent in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is part of a larger effort to deal with the conflict in the region. This expansion is an essential step in our goal of promoting regional stability. The Council's endorsement of this plan is evidence that the international community can work together towards the prevention and resolution of conflict.
