In view of the late hour, and since one member of the Council has requested that the draft resolution before us should not be put to the vote today or tomorrow, I propose to adjourn the meeting until Friday at 10.30 a.m. if that is convenient to members. Mr. ARCE (Argentina). (translated from Spanish): I only wish to remind the President that before this draft resolution, No. S;134O, there are no less than seven drafts which bear earlier .numbers; if mathematics is still an exact science, I understand 'that No. 1330 comes before No. 1340 and that the drafts represented by the Argentine delegation should therefore pe considered first. Mr. AUSTIN (United States of America): I regret very much to have to say that the time for our next meeting which has been suggested by the President is inconvenient for me. I should never want to interpose my convenience in the path of facilitating the work of the Security Council. .The fact is, however, that I have a longstanding engagement for Monday, 27 June, for which I have made all preparations. Therefore, this changing of the dates of our meetings is extremely inconvenient for me. If I had a deputy to attend meetings of the Council, it would be somewhat different, but I have no deputy. Of course, if the Security Council holds another meeting this week, I shall have to come, and I shall have to take care 9f my previous engagement in some manner-just how, I do not know. I wonder if the President would consider putting off this next meeting until 5 July.

I do not think it would help to advance the time to Thursday, since today is Tuesday. M. I do not think it would be altogether advisable to examine all questi,ons connected with the admission of new Members so quickly; it seems to me that the proposal submitted by the delegation of the Soviet Un~on is not as familiar to all members as, say, those submitted by the representative of Argentina, which have been discussed more than once in the past. The USSR proposal is a more radical treatment .of the problem and therefore has. great political significance of principle as regards the admission to membership of the States which have submitted the applications now appearing on the Security Council's agenda. , . It would seem,. therefore, .that delegations should be given some time to think over the USSR proposals. It may be that some delegations will also have to consult their Governments; all members may not be authorized to take a decision. personally on the matter without further instructions from their Governments. This has to be taken into consideration. . . I think, therefore, that to hold the next meeting as. early as the President suggests would be. inadvisable.
