1 have to announce that the candidate elected by the Council has not obtained the neoosflary majority in the General Assembly and we must therefore hold a further electi9n.

The 759th meeting of the Security Couneil is resumed.
7. 1 have to inform you that the General Assembly ia now in session and that at any moment we can expect to have the results of the vote. Hence with your permission we shaH remain in session.
The meeting was suspended at 3.20 p.m. and resumed at 4.20 p.m.
The United Nations General Assembly has elected a candidate other th.m the person elected by the Security CQuncil. The Assembly has postponed consideration of tbis matter in order to take up other items on its agenda. in particular the election of the non-permanent members of the Security Council.
9. The Security Council must therefore adjourn. and we shall reconV'ene as soon as the Assembly meets to deal with tbis election question. Unfortunately. 1 do not know when that will be. It may he tbis evening. tomorrow morning or tomorrow aftemoon. In 8ny event. 1 would ask Council members to he ready to atten~ when the Assembly meets for tbis purpose.
