The agenda was adopted.
L'ordrc du jour est adDpte.
I understand that Panama foHows Lebanon on the list of speakers. As the statement of the representative of Lebanon will not require consecutive interpretfltion and I should like to make a very brief statement, I would asl( the President to llow me to speak after the representative of Lebanon.

Before suggesting the adjournment of the debaLe, I asked the representative of the United Kingdom to defer unli! tomolTOW the brief comments he wished to make in connex.ion with the statement of tllc represen~ tative of Iraq. If the representative of Panama has no objectioil, I will first call on the representative of the United Kingdom - who will make a brief statement -- and then call 011 the representative of Panama, who will be the la:;t speaker at this meeting. ~)8. Sir Pierwn DIXON (United Kingdom): Mr. President, I am grateful to you for giving me the fioor and to the Council for its induLgence, which allows me to intervene very briefly to answer a point raised al the present me.eting by the representative of Iraq. 59. Aftcr recognizing that the action of the United Kingdom in responding to the request for assistance which it had received from the Government of Jordan had been fully justified. the representative of Iraq then asked, if I understood him correetly, that for the purpose of the record I should give a dear declaration thflt. Her Majesty's Government would withdraw its troops if the legally constituted Government or Jordan requested it to do so. I can, of course, make unequivocally the declaration for which the rcpresentative of Iraq has asked. 53. I'Irak m'a demal1dee. clYol'~ will be made to strengthen Lile United Nations, for its continued existence is essential not only to international peace and security, but also to the sUf'vival of the human Hlce. 61. Panama will support allY action taken in this Council to strengthen the United Nations and to promote its high aims. That is why we express the hop~ here tonight that a solution of the problem u[ the Middle East will be found within the framework of the United Nations Charter and in conformity with its purposes and principles, 62. My delegation deeply regrets that the serious situatioll in the Middle EH!>t hHS made it necessary for a friendly Power to take emergency action. Nevertlleless, my delegation believes that the terms of operative paragraph 2 of t.he revised text of the United States draft resolution would enable the United Nations to talle effective measures for tIle restoration of order in the MidrHe East and would restore confidence in the Organization's ability to maintain international peace Hud security. 63. The implemeIltatiun of the provbions of operative paral,.,fJ'aph 2 would result in the immediate withdrawal of United States forces from Lebnncse territory and would IC;j,ve the situation entirety in the hunds of thl;', United Nationg. It is on that understanding that my country has decided to sUIJport the United States draft resolution [S!4050IR("~d], 'ne mec/ing rose at ]{).2S p.m. 01.
