S/PV.9854 Security Council

Friday, Jan. 31, 2025 — Session 80, Meeting 9854 — New York — UN Document ↗

Provisional

Adoption of the agenda

The agenda was adopted.
The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. Members of the Council have before them document S/2025/68, which contains the text of a draft resolution submitted by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I wish to draw the attention of Council members to document S/2025/6, which contains the report of the Secretary-General on United Nations Operation in Cyprus, and document S/2025/7/Rev.1, which contains the report of the Secretary-General on mission of good offices in Cyprus. The Council is ready to proceed to the vote on the draft resolution before it. I should like to inform the Council that the presidency of the Council has met with the representatives of the parties, who have confirmed that they maintain their well-known positions vis-à-vis the item on the Council’s agenda. On the basis of those meetings, with the consent of the members of the Council, the presidency has drawn the conclusion that the Council can proceed to take a decision on the draft resolution before it. If I hear no objection, I shall put the draft resolution to the vote now.
A vote was taken by show of hands.

I remember the first day of the presidency, when the Council adopted the provisional programme of work. Everyone thanked me for the very light programme — 16 meeting spread out throughout the month. I did not understand the rationale behind those thanks; now I do. The then attractive empty slot did not survive. We could not have done it alone and without the hard work, support and positive contributions of every delegation and all the dedicated representatives of the Secretariat, including, but by no means limited to, the technical support team, conference service officers, interpreters — especially
