We have now heard the last speaker on agenda item 38 at this stage of its consideration in plenary. The statements made during the past few days have thrown light on different aspeccs of the item and have also contained useful comments on the recommendations of the Group of High-level Intergovernmental Experts. This will no doubt further facilitate consideration ("\1= t::he item" In accordance with the decision of the General Assembly, the item is now being referred to the Fifth Committee, which will "within the scope of its responsibilities, undertake a factual examination of the report and submit its findings to the plenary meeting~. (A/4l/PV.3, p. 19) According to the same decision the item will be referred again to the plenary for consideration and for a final decision. On the basis of consultations I have held, the Fifth Committee will conclude its examination of the item and submit its factual findings so as to enable the .plenary Assembly to take up ~e matter again by 30 OCtober 1986 at the latest. I note here with appreciation the assurance of the Chairman of the Fifth Committee that he will keep me apprised of all developments within that Committee relating to this item. Meanwhile, I shall contir.ue to be available to all delegations and solicit their co-operation in facilitating the emergence of a consensus. To facilitate consensus on this very important item, which deals with a question primarily of a political nature, I propose to undertake consultations, at an appropriate stage, (The President) with representatives drawn frOll all regional groups.
