17. APPOINTMENTS TO FILL VACANCIES IN SUBSIDIARY ORGANS (q) APPOINTMENT or MEMBERS OF mE COMMITTEE ON CONFERENCES: NOTE BY THE SECRETARY-GENERAL (A/45/1G7 an~ Corr.l) Th- PRESIPENTi As indicated in document A/45/107 and Carr.l, the General Assembly, hy its resolution 43/222 B of 21 December 1988, decided that the Committee n Conferences should be composed of 21 members to be appointed by the President of the Assembly, after consultations with the chairmen of the reqional qroups, for a period of three years, on the basis of qeoqraphical distribution. ~he Assembly further decided that each year one third of the Committee's membership shall retire and that retirinq members shall be eliqible for reappointment. Since the terms of office of Chile, Cyprus, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Japan and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics expire on 31 December 1990, it is necessary for the President of the General Assembly to appoint during the current session seven memb~rs to fill the resulting vacancies. The mQmbera 80 appointed vill serve for a period of three years beqinninq OD 1 January 1991. After consultations vith the chairmen of the regional groups I have appointed Chile, Cyprus, Fruca, Gabon, Japan, Kenya end the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as members of the Committoe on Conferences, with effect from 1 Jeuuary 19910 May I take it that the Assembly takes note ef that appointment? It WAS so decided.
I should also like to draw the attention of the Assembly
to a letter dated 3 October 1990 (A/45/561), in which the Federal Minister fer
Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany informed the Secretary-General
that through the accession of the German Democratic Republic to the Federal
Republic of Germany, with effect from 3 October 1990, the two German States had
united to form one sovereign State.
Consequently, the seat that had been occupied by the former German Democratic
Republic in the Committee on Conferences became vacant as at 3 October 1990. The
term of office of the former German Democratic Republic was scheduled to expire on
31 December 1991.
After consultations with the chairmen of the regional groups, I have appointed
Hungary as a member of the Committee on Conferences to fill the vacant seat, with
immediate effect.
May I consider that the Assembly takes note of this appointment?
It was so declded.
We have concluded our consideration of sub-item (q) of
agenda item 17.
41. QUESTION OF EQUITABLE REPRESENTATION ON AND INCREASE IN THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL tbe PRESIDENT~ I understand that there is no request to consider agenda item 41 at the present session. If that is the case, may I take it that the Assembly decides to include the item in the provisional agenda of the forty-sixth session? It-was so decided.
That concludes our consideration of agenda item 41.
The meeting rose at 5.25 p.m.
