It is a most pleasant duty for me to express to the representative of Czechoslovakia, Mr. Hulinskjl, on behalf of the members of the Council, our thanks for the services he rendered as President of the Council in September and for the effectiveness with which he conducted our work during that month.

I have convened this meeting as the result of approaches made to me as President of the Council by several delegations.
4. Members of the Council have been anxiously following the events of the past several days in and around Beirut. The acts of violence have caused and are still causing loss of human life, suffering and destruction which arc a source of anguish to the international community. It became clear that every possible attempt must be made to put an end to the violence. That is the purpose of this meeting.
5. Members of the Council have before them the text of a draft resolution in document S/12883. It is my understanding that the Council is ready to proceed to the vote on that draft.

The draft resolution \vas adopted unanimously.1
It is my understanding that, because of the tragic events that are the object of this meeting and because of the urgency of the measures to be taken, the members of the Council have agreed not to make statements. I thank the members for their great diligence in the preparation and adoption of this resolution. I wish to pay a tribute to them aIs0 for the compassion and solidarity which they have shown today.
