The President on behalf of Council unattributed #136458
Since our last meeting, members of the Security Council have learned with great sorrow of the recent passing away of the President of Botswana, Sir Seretse Khama, whose distinguished leadership had served the people and the Government of Botswana both before and after that country’s attainment of independence. As a strong supporter of the United Nations, Sir Seretse Khama is deeply mourned by the international community. On behalf of the Council, I wish to express profound condolences to the Government and people of Botswana, and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. 3. A second recent death, that of Mr. Sharif Abdel- Hamid Sharaf, the Prime Minister of Jordan, has also caused sorrow in these halls, where Mr. Sharaf was well known and respected as a distinguished statesman. I wish to extend to the Government and people of Jordan, on behalf of the Security Council, our profound condolences on their loss, and our deep sympathy to Mr. Sharaf s family. [On the proposal of the President, the members of the Council, standing, observed a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of Sir Seretse Khama and Mr. Sharif Abdel-Hamid Sharaf.] Adoption of the agenda The agenda was adopted. I would suggest that the members of the Committee on the Admission of New Members should meet this afternoon in order to examine the application of Zimbabwe and prepare the Committee’s report to the Council. It was so decided. 7. As there are no objections, the Committee on the Admission of New Members will meet at 3.30 p.m. today. I would request the Committee to prepare its report for consideration by the Security Council at a meeting which I intend to schedule for tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock.
