1. At the 2290th meeting of the Security Council on 8 July 1981, the application of the Republic of Vanuatu (s/14506) for admission to membership in the United Nations was considered. In accordance with rule 59 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, and in the absence of any objection, the President of the Council referred the application to the Committee on the Admission of New Members for examination and report.
2. At its 67th meeting on 8 July, the Committee considered the application of the Republic of Vanuatu.
3. The representatives of France, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the German Democratic Republic, Ireland, the Philippines, the Soviet Socialist Republics, and Uganda submitted the following draft resolution, which was also sponsored by China, Japan, Mexico, Niger, Spain, Tunisia, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics:
"The Security Council,
Having examined the application of the Republic of Vanuatu for admission to the United Nations (s/14506),
Recommends to the General Assembly that the Republic of Vanuatu be admitted to membership in the United Nations."
4. The Committee unanimously decided to recommend to the Security Council the adoption of the draft resolution concerning the admission of the Republic of Vanuatu to membership in the United Nations.
