I have been authorized to make the following complementary statement on behalf of the Security Council [S/13362] regarding the resolution just adopted on the renewal of the mandate of UNDOF:

The meeting was called to order at 5.55 p.m
Further, on behalf of the delegation of China, I wish to state that, as it has not participated in the vote on this resolution, it takes the same position with regard to the statement which I have just read out on behalf of the members of the Council.

Before proceeding with the business before us, I should like to extend a word of welcome to the new representative of Bolivia on the Security Council, His Excellency Mr. Sergio Palacios.
I should like to inform the Council that I have received a letter dated 30 May from the representative of Lebanon [S/I3354 in which he requests an urgent meeting of the Council to discuss the rapidly deteriorating situation in Southern Lebanon resulting from Israeli escalation of its attacks and the adverse effect this may have on the implementation of Council resolutions 425 (1978) and 444 (1979).

The situation in the Middle East: Report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (S/13350)
Members of the Council have before them the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (IJNDOF) covering the period from 25 November 1978 to 24 May 1979 [S/13350] and a draft resolution [S/133571.
6. In this connexion, and following the informal consultations held this afternoon, the Council will meet tomorrow at 11.30 to begin its consideration of this matter.
3. I shall now put the draft resolution to the vote.
A vote was taken by show of hands.
The draft resohrtion was adopted by 14 votes to none.’
One member (China) did not participate in the voting.
“As is known, the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force [S/23350] states in paragraph 28 that, ‘despite the present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the situation in the Middle East as a whole continues to be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached’. This statement of the Secretary-General reflects the view of the Security Council.”
