Political prisoners in South Africa The General Assembly, Recalling the numerous resolutions adopted by the Security Council and the General Assembly regarding political prisoners and persons imprisoned, interned or subjected to other restrictions for their opposition to apartheid, Gravely concerned at continuing reports of repres.- sion by the Government of South Africa against op- ponen ts of apartheid and of ill-treatment and torture of detainees and political prisoners, Noting with appreciation the statement on political prisoners in South Africa, adopted by the Special Committee on Apartheid on 17 August 1973,1 Reaffirming the legitimacy of the struggle of the people of South Africa against apartheid and racial discrimination, 1 See A/SPC/160, annex. 25 42 42 42 42 42 42 42 103 103 103 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 14 December 1973 30 30 30 31 32 32 32 34 34 34 Strongly convinced that the release of leaders of the oppressed people of South Africa and other opponents of apartheid from imprisonment and other restrictions is essential for a• peaceful solution of the grave situation in South Africa, 1. Condemns the failure of the Government of South Africa to comply with the repeated requests of the General Assembly and the Security Council for the release of all persons imprisoned, interned or otherwise restricted for their opposition to apartheid; 2. Again calls upon the Government of South Africa to grant forthwith unconditional release to all such persons; 3. Appeals to all Governments, organizations and individuals to undertake more vigorous and concerted action to publicize and support the legitimate cause of all those persecuted in South Africa for their opposi tion to apartheid and racial discrimination. 2 I 57th plenary meeting 26 October 1973
