Recalling its resolutions 3265 В (XXIX) of 9 DecemЬer 1974 , 3476 В (ХХХ) of 11 DecemЬer 1975 , 31/73 of 10 DecemЬer 1976 , 32/83 of 12 DecemЬer 1977 , 33/65 of 14 DecemЬer 1978 , 34/78 of 11 December 1979 , 35/148 of 12 DecemЬer 1980, 36/88 of9 DecemЬer 1981 , 37/76 of9 DecemЬer 1982 and 38/65 of 15 DecemЬer 1983 concern­ ing the estaЫishment of а nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia, Reiterating its conviction that the estaЫishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones in various regions of the world is one of the measures which can contribute most effec­ tively to the objectives of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and general and complete disarmament, Be/ieving that the estaЫishment of а nuclear-weapon­ free zone in South Asia, as in other regions, will strengthen the security of the States of the region against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons, Noting the declarations issued at the highest Jeve\ Ьу Govemments of South Asian States reaffirming their undertaking not to acquire or manufacture nuclear weap­ ons and to devote their nuclear programmes exclusively to the economic and social advancement of their peoples, Reca/ling that in the above-mentioned resolutions it called upon the States of the South Asian region, and such other neighЬouring non-nuclear-weapon States as might Ье interested, to make all possiЫe efforts to estaЫish а nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia and to refrain, in the meantime, from any action contrary to this objective, Further recalling that, in its resolution 3265 В (XXIX), it requested the Secretary-General to convene а meeting for the purpose of the consultations mentioned therein and to render such assistance as might Ье required to promote the efforts for the estaЫishment of а nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia, Bearing in mind the provisions of paragraphs 60 to 6 3 of the Final Document of the Tenth Special Session of the General AssemЫy7 regarding the estaЫishment of nuclear­ weapon-free zones, including in the region of South Asia, Taking note of the report of the Secretary-General, 10 l. Reaffi,rms its endorsement, in principle, of the con­ cept of а nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia; 2. Urges о псе again the States of South Asia, and such other neighbouring non-nuclear-weapon States as may Ье interested, to continue to make all possiЫe efforts to estab­ lish а nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia and to refrain, in the meantime, from any action contrary to this objective; 3. Calls ироп those nuclear-weapon States that have not done so to respond positively to this proposal and to extend the necessary co-operation in the efforts to estaЫish а nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia; 4. Recal/ing its resolutions 32/152 of 19 December 1977, 35/153 of 12 DecemЬer 1980, 36/93 of 9 December 1981, 37/79 of 9 DecemЬer 1982 and 38/66 of 15 December 1983 , Recalling with satisfaction the adoption, on 1 О OctoЬer 1980, of the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons Which Мау Ве Deemed to Ве Excessively lnjurious or to Have Indis­ criminate Effects, together with the Protocol on Non­ DetectaЫe Fragments (Protocol 1), the Protocol on ProhiЬitions or Restrictions on the Use of Mines, ВооЬу Traps and Other Devices (Protocol 11) and the Protoco\ on ProhiЬitions or Restrictions on the Use of Incendiary Weapons (Protocol III), 11 Reaffi,rming its conviction that general agreement on the prohiЬition or restriction of use of specific conventional weapons would significantly reduce the suffering of civilian populations and of combatants, Taking note with satisfaction of the report of the Secre­ tary-General, 12 1. Notes with satisfaction that an increasing numЬer of States have either signed, ratified, accepted or acceded to the Convention on ProhiЬitions or Restrictions on the Use ofCertain Conventional Weapons Which Мау Ве Deemed to Ве Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects, which was opened for signature in New У ork on 1 О April 1981; 2. Further notes with satisfaction that, consequent upon the fulfilment of the conditions set out in article 5 of the Convention, the Convention and the three Protocols annexed thereto entered into force on 2 DecemЬer 1983: 3. Urges al\ States that have not yet done so to exert their Ьest endeavours to Ьесоmе parties to the Convention and the Protocols annexed thereto as early as possiЫe, so as ultimately to obtain universality of adherence; 4. Notes that, under article 8 of the Convention, con­ ferences may Ье convened to consider amendments to the Convention or any of the annexed Protocols, to consider additional protocols relating to other categories of conven­ tional weapons not covered Ьу the existing annexed Proto­ cols, or to review the scope and operation of the Conven­ tion and the Protocols annexed thereto and to consider any proposal for amendments to the Convention or to the existing Protocols and any proposals for additional proto­ cols relating to other categories of conventional weapons not covered Ьу the existing Protocols; 5. Requests the Secretary-General as depositary of the Convention and its three annexed Protocols to inform the General AssemЫy from time to time of the state of adher­ ence to the Convention and its Protocols: 12А/39/471.
