United Nations A/RES/57/64 General Assembly Distr.: General 30 December 2002 Fifty-seventh session Agenda item 66 (k) 02 54232 Resolution adopted by the General Assembly [on the report of the First Committee (A/57/510)] 57/64. Observance of environmental norms in the drafting and implementation of agreements on disarmament and arms control The General Assembly, Recalling its resolutions 50/70 M of 12 December 1995, 51/45 E of 10 December 1996, 52/38 E of 9 December 1997, 53/77 J of 4 December 1998, 54/54 S of 1 December 1999, 55/33 K of 20 November 2000 and 56/24 F of 29 November 2001, Emphasizing the importance of the observance of environmental norms in the preparation and implementation of disarmament and arms limitation agreements, Recognizing that it is necessary to take duly into account the agreements adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, as well as prior relevant agreements, in the drafting and implementation of agreements on disarmament and arms limitation, Taking note of the report of the Secretary-General,1 Mindful of the detrimental environmental effects of the use of nuclear weapons, 1. Reaffirms that international disarmament forums should take fully into account the relevant environmental norms in negotiating treaties and agreements on disarmament and arms limitation and that all States, through their actions, should contribute fully to ensuring compliance with the aforementioned norms in the implementation of treaties and conventions to which they are parties; 2. Calls upon States to adopt unilateral, bilateral, regional and multilateral measures so as to contribute to ensuring the application of scientific and technological progress in the framework of international security, disarmament and other related spheres, without detriment to the environment or to its effective contribution to attaining sustainable development; _______________ 1 A/57/121 and Add.1 and 2. A/RES/57/64 2 3. Welcomes the information provided by Member States on the implementation of the measures they have adopted to promote the objectives envisaged in the present resolution;1 4. Invites all Member States to communicate to the Secretary-General information on the measures they have adopted to promote the objectives envisaged in the present resolution, and requests the Secretary-General to submit a report containing this information to the General Assembly at its fifty-eighth session; 5. Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its fifty-eighth session the item entitled “Observance of environmental norms in the drafting and implementation of agreements on disarmament and arms control”. 57th plenary meeting 22 November 2002
