United Nations A/RES/61/70 General Assembly Distr.: General 3 January 2007 Sixty-first session Agenda item 90 06-49863 Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 6 December 2006 [on the report of the First Committee (A/61/394)] 61/70. 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its Preparatory Committee The General Assembly, Recalling its resolution 2373 (XXII) of 12 June 1968, the annex to which contains the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,1 Noting the provisions of article VIII, paragraph 3, of the Treaty regarding the convening of review conferences at five-year intervals, Recalling the outcomes of the 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons2 and of the 2000 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty,3 Recalling also the decision of the 2000 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on improving the effectiveness of the strengthened review process for the Treaty,4 which reaffirmed the provisions in the decision on strengthening the review process for the Treaty, adopted by the 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Parties to the Treaty,5 Recalling further that the 2005 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty, held from 2 to 27 May 2005, 6 was unable to produce a consensus substantive outcome on the review of the implementation of the provisions of the Treaty, Noting the decision on strengthening the review process for the Treaty, in which it was agreed that review conferences should continue to be held every five _______________ 1 See also United Nations, Treaty Series, vol. 729, No. 10485. 2 See 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Final Document, Part I (NPT/CONF.1995/32 (Part I) and Corr.2). 3 See 2000 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Final Document, vols. A/RES/61/70 2 years, and noting that, accordingly, the next review conference should be held in 2010, Recalling the decision of the 2000 Review Conference that three sessions of the Preparatory Committee should be held in the years prior to the review conference,4 1. Takes note of the decision of the parties to the Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,1 following appropriate consultations, to hold the first session of the Preparatory Committee in Vienna from 30 April to 11 May 2007; 2. Requests the Secretary-General to render the necessary assistance and to provide such services, including summary records, as may be required for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its Preparatory Committee. 67th plenary meeting 6 December 2006
