United Nations A/RES/76/34 General Assembly Distr.: General 10 December 2021 21-18427 (E) 151221 *2118427* Seventy-sixth session Agenda item 100 (ii) General and complete disarmament: Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 6 December 2021 [on the report of the First Committee (A/76/444, para. 93)] 76/34. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons The General Assembly, Recalling its resolutions 72/31 of 4 December 2017, 73/48 of 5 December 2018, 74/41 of 12 December 2019 and 75/40 of 7 December 2020, 1. Recalls the adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons 1 on 7 July 2017; 2. Welcomes the entry into force of the Treaty on 22 January 2021; 3. Notes that the Treaty has been open for signature at United Nations Headquarters in New York since 20 September 2017; 4. Welcomes that already 86 States had signed the Treaty and 55 States had become parties to it as at 6 October 2021; 5. Confirms that the Secretary-General of the United Nations is no longer required to convene the first Meeting of States Parties within one year of the entry into force of the Treaty in accordance with article 8, paragraph 2, thereof; 6. Also confirms that the first Meeting of States Parties will be held from 22 to 24 March 2022 at the United Nations Office at Vienna, and requests the Secretary-General to convene the first Meeting on those dates and the Secretariat to make the appropriate arrangements to that end; 7. Invites States not party to the Treaty, as well as the relevant entities of the United Nations system, other relevant international organizations or institutions, regional organizations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and relevant __________________ 1 A/CONF.229/2017/8. A/RES/76/34 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons 21-18427 2/2 non-governmental organizations to attend the first Meeting of States Parties as observers; 8. Calls upon all States that have not yet done so to sign, ratify, accept, approve or accede to the Treaty at the earliest possible date; 9. Calls upon those States in a position to do so to promote adherence to the Treaty through bilateral, subregional, regional and multilateral contacts, outreach and other means; 10. Requests the Secretary-General, as depositary of the Treaty, to report to the General Assembly at its seventy-seventh session on the status of signature and ratification, acceptance, approval or accession of the Treaty; 11. Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its seventy-seventh session, under the item entitled “General and complete disarmament”, the sub-item entitled “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons”. 45th plenary meeting 6 December 2021
