79/266. International Day for Judicial Well-being
The General Assembly,
Recalling its resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of
20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years and Economic and
Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980 on international years and
anniversaries,
Recalling also article 11 of the United Nations Convention against Corruption,
in which the crucial role of the judiciary in combating corruption is recognized and
under the terms of which States parties are required, in accordance with the
fundamental principles of their legal system and without prejudice to judicial
independence, to take measures to strengthen integrity and to prevent opportunities
for corruption among members of the judiciary, including rules with respect to the
conduct of members of the judiciary,
Noting the role of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in supporting
States in their efforts to effectively implement the Convention, including through
establishing the Global Judicial Integrity Network as a platform for judges and
judiciaries to share experiences and to strengthen judicial integrity and prevent
corruption in the justice sector, in line with article 11 of the Convention,
Taking note of the knowledge products and tools developed by the United
Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Global Judicial Integrity Network on
different aspects of the implementation of article 11 of the Convention, including the
global survey report on exploring linkages between judicial well-being and judicial
integrity,

Taking note also of the findings of the above-mentioned report on the global
survey conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and other studies
on judicial stress and well-being,
Reaffirming that a well-functioning judiciary exemplifies the six core judicial
values enshrined in the Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct: 1 independence,
impartiality, integrity, propriety, equality, competence and diligence,
Acknowledging that the physical and mental well-being of judges is crucial for
promoting competence and due diligence, which highlights the importance of
addressing judicial stress and the necessity of providing appropriate support,
Taking note of the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-being, adopted on 25 July
2024,
1.
Decides to proclaim 25 July of each year the International Day for Judicial
Well-being;
2.
Invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system,
including United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, other international and regional
organizations, judicial institutions, academia, associations of judges and other
relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to observe the International Day for
Judicial Well-being, within existing resources, annually in a manner that each
considers most appropriate, including through education and public awareness-raising
activities;
3.
Stresses that the cost of all activities that may arise from the
implementation of the present resolution should be met from voluntary contributions;
4.
Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the
attention of all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system and
civil society organizations for appropriate observance of the International Day for
Judicial Well-being.
