79/269. International Day of Peaceful Coexistence
The General Assembly,
Reaffirming the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United
Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1 including the right to
freedom of thought, conscience and religion,
Recognizing the importance of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a
Culture of Peace, 2 which serve as the universal mandate for the international
community, particularly the United Nations system, for the promotion of a culture of
peace and non‑violence that benefits humanity, in particular future generations, and
recalling in this regard its resolution 72/130 of 8 December 2017, by which it declared
16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace,
Recalling its resolution 36/55 of 25 November 1981, by which it proclaimed the
Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination
Based on Religion or Belief,
Recalling also its resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of
20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years and Economic and
Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980 on international years and
anniversaries,
Recognizing that peace not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a
positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts
are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation,
Acknowledging that the promotion of a culture of peace, mutual understanding,
respect for the diversity of humankind, dialogue among civilizations and the
prevention of conflict can contribute to peaceful coexistence,

Reaffirming the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,3 and acknowledging
that this includes a commitment to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for
sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective,
accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels,
Underlining the importance of raising awareness about different cultures,
values, attitudes, modes of behaviour and ways of life, and religions or beliefs and of
education in the promotion of tolerance, which involves the acceptance by the public
of and its respect for religious and cultural diversity, including with regard to religious
expression, and underlining further the fact that education, in particular at school,
should contribute in a meaningful way to promoting tolerance and the elimination of
all forms of discrimination,
Acknowledging the need for the full, equal, safe and meaningful participation of
women and the important and positive contribution of youth in the promotion of peace
and security, sustainable development and human rights,
Emphasizing that Member States, regional organizations, national human rights
institutions, the private sector, non‑governmental organizations, religious bodies, the
media, and civil society as a whole have an important role to play in promoting
tolerance and respect for religious and cultural diversity and in the universal
promotion and protection of human rights,
Recognizing the leading role of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization and the work of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in
promoting intercultural dialogue and their contribution to interreligious dialogue, as
well as their activities related to a culture of peace and non‑violence,
Encouraging activities aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence in order to
enhance peace and social stability, respect for diversity and mutual respect and to
create, at the global, regional, national and local levels, an environment conducive to
peace and mutual understanding,

Decides to proclaim 28 January the International Day of Peaceful
Coexistence, to be observed annually;
2.
Invites all Member States and relevant organizations of the United Nations
system, within existing resources, as well as other international and regional
organizations and other stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector,
academia and the media, to observe the International Day in an appropriate manner;
3.
Invites all Member States to further promote a culture of peace to help to
ensure peace and sustainable development, including through the celebration of the
international, regional and national days in this regard and by mobilizing the efforts
of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding
and solidarity;
4.
Stresses that the cost of all activities that may arise from the
implementation of the present resolution should be met from voluntary contributions;
5.
Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the
attention of all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system and
civil society organizations for appropriate observance.
