79/270. International Day of Hope
The General Assembly,
Bearing in mind the Charter of the United Nations, including the purposes and

generations from the scourge of war, taking other appropriate measures to strengthen
universal peace, to practising tolerance and living together in peace as good
neighbours,
Recalling the preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1 in which
it is stated that the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of
speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest
aspiration of the common people, and reaffirming human rights and fundamental
freedoms,
Recalling also its resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of
20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years and Economic and

anniversaries,
Recalling further its resolution 73/329 of 25 July 2019 entitled “Promoting the

community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity to
build the culture of peace with love and conscience,
Recognizing the relevance of hope and well-being as universal goals and
aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their

2/2
Recognizing also the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach
to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication,
happiness and hope for all peoples,
Taking note of the message of the Secretary-General on United Nations Day,
24 October 2022, in which he highlighted the United Nations as the product of hope
and the resolve to move beyond global strife to worldwide collaboration,
1.
Decides to declare 12 July the International Day of Hope;
2.
Welcomes, in this regard, activities aimed at regularly mobilizing the
efforts of the international community to promote well-being, in order to amplify hope
and enhance peace, tolerance and social stability, respect for diversity and mutual
respect, and create, at the global level and also at the regional, national and local
levels, an environment conducive to well-being, peace and mutual understanding;
3.
Encourages all Member States and observers of the United Nations,
organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional
organizations, as well as civil society, including non‑governmental organizations and

to disseminate messages of hope, through educational and public awareness-raising
activities;
4.
Invites all Member States to further amplify hope to help to ensure peace,
well-being and sustainable development, including by working with communities and
other relevant actors, through reconciliatory measures and acts of service, and by
encouraging forgiveness and compassion among individuals;
5.
Stresses that the cost of all activities that may arise from the
implementation of the present resolution should be met from voluntary contributions;
6.
Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the
attention of all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system,
