United Nations A/RES/79/291 General Assembly Distr.: General 9 June 2025 25-08974 (E) *2508974* Seventy-ninth session Agenda item 13 Integrated and coordinated implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits in the economic, social and related fields Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 3 June 2025 [without reference to a Main Committee (A/79/L.89)] 79/291. World Horse Day The General Assembly, Reaffirming its resolution 70/1 of 25 September 2015, entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, in which it adopted a comprehensive, far-reaching and people-centred set of universal and transformative Sustainable Development Goals and targets, Reaffirming also its resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of 20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years, and Economic and Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980 on international years and anniversaries, in particular paragraphs 1 to 10 of the annex thereto on the agreed criteria for the proclamation of international years, as well as paragraphs 13 and 14, in which it is stated that an international day or year should not be proclaimed before the basic arrangements for its organization and financing have been made, Emphasizing that at present there are over 57 million horses in the world and that in many countries the horse industry plays an important role in the socioeconomic development and well-being of people and the promotion of equine welfare and specifically contributes to the daily lives and economic empowerment of the rural population and local communities through riding, transportation, horse racing, equestrian sports, tourism and recreational activities, as well as employment generation, food production and other businesses, Recognizing the efforts of Member States to preserve and develop horse culture and heritage as well as the conservation of pastoral nomadic lifestyles, Acknowledging that both the number of horses and the equine industry are declining worldwide to some extent due to changes in lifestyles, pressure on the industry from economic fluctuations, climate change, and environmental and other factors, A/RES/79/291 World Horse Day 25-08974 2/2 Trusting that the designation of a World Horse Day would create a global platform for the international community to raise awareness of the importance of the horse and the equine industry in sustainable agriculture development, 1. Decides to proclaim 11 July World Horse Day; 2. Invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, other international and regional organizations and other relevant stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector and academia, as well as schools, to observe World Horse Day, in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national priorities, through activities aimed at raising awareness among the public of the economic and social importance of the horse and the equine industry, encouraging the development of professional training, scientific research, the dissemination of best practices in the equine sector, and the promotion of equine welfare, preserving horse culture and heritage, and sharing knowledge, information, best practices and other collaborative approaches in this regard; 3. Stresses that the cost of all activities that may arise from the implementation of the present resolution should be met by voluntary contributions and that such activities would be subject to the availability and provision of voluntary contributions; 4. Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the attention of all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system and other relevant stakeholders, including civil society, Indigenous Peoples, the private sector and academia, for appropriate observance. 73rd plenary meeting 3 June 2025
