United Nations A/RES/79/315 General Assembly Distr.: General 2 July 2025 25-10887 (E) *2510887* Seventy-ninth session Agenda item 14 Culture of peace Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 30 June 2025 [without reference to a Main Committee (A/79/L.95)] 79/315. The Wiphala for living well in harmony, balance and complementarity with Mother Earth The General Assembly, Reaffirming the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, Reaffirming also the Universal Declaration of Human Rights1 and the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, 2 and recalling the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples 3 and the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization 4 as applicable to Member States that are Parties to that Convention, Acknowledging the Wiphala, which reflects the multicoloured rainbow, composed of seven colours harmoniously arranged in a geometric grid pattern, inspired by the order, harmony and beauty of Nature, originating from and used by some Indigenous Peoples and some other social groups and organizations and adopted in a number of countries in their resistance against colonialism, demands for brotherhood and sisterhood, peace and international unity, and as an affirmation of living in harmony, balance and complementarity among all living beings on Mother Earth, Taking into account that, for those who raise the Wiphala, it embodies a unity of values and ways of life grounded in respect for life and aligned with the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations, _______________ 1 Resolution 217 A (III). 2 Resolutions 53/243 A and B. 3 Resolution 61/295. 4 United Nations, Treaty Series, vol. 2440, No. 43977. A/RES/79/315 The Wiphala for living well in harmony, balance and complementarity with Mother Earth 25-10887 2/2 1. Recalls Indigenous Peoples’ rights, as recognized in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, to practise and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs, which includes the right to maintain, protect and develop the past, present and future manifestations of their cultures, as well as the right to maintain, control, protect and develop their cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions, including their sciences and technologies; 2. Invites Member States to promote the appreciation of and respect for all cultures, noting the Wiphala as a manifestation by which certain Indigenous Peoples reaffirm their identity, unity and values, and safeguard their cultural heritage and traditional knowledge, and as an expression of living well in harmony, balance and complementarity with Mother Earth, to be displayed in public, educational and institutional spaces, as appropriate; 3. Calls upon the international community to advance in the understanding, tolerance and solidarity among all peoples and cultures, and to strengthen efforts to eradicate manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, including against Indigenous Peoples, and promote respect for the diversity of their cultural manifestations, traditions, practices and knowledge systems. 81st plenary meeting 30 June 2025
