80/10. International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls
The General Assembly,
Reaffirming the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations,
Reaffirming also the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, 1 the
International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, 2 the International
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, 3 the
Convention on the Rights of the Child4 and the Convention on the Elimination of All
Forms of Discrimination against Women,5
Recalling the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 6 the United Nations
Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 7 the Beijing Declaration and
Platform for Action, 8 the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action 9 and the
Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and
Development,10

Reaffirming the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 11 and that the
empowerment of all women and girls will make a crucial contribution to progress
across all the Sustainable Development Goals and targets,
Reaffirming also its resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of
20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years, and Economic and
Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980 on international years and
anniversaries, in particular paragraphs 1 to 10 of the annex thereto on the agreed
criteria for the proclamation of international years, as well as paragraphs 13 and 14,
in which it is stated that an international day or year should not be proclaimed before
the basic arrangements for its organization and financing have been made,
Recognizing that the participation, perspectives and knowledge of Indigenous
women and girls contribute significantly to, inter alia, sustainable development, the
conservation of biological diversity and natural resources, the protection of the
environment, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, the preservation and
revitalization of Indigenous languages and cultures, maternal health, the
intergenerational transmission of knowledge, and the promotion of Indigenous and
traditional medicine,
Noting Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women general
recommendation No. 39 (2022) on the rights of Indigenous women and girls12 and
general recommendation No. 40 (2024) on the equal and inclusive representation of
women in decision-making systems, respectively,13
Emphasizing the need for States to recognize and protect the cultural heritage,
scientific and medical knowledge, literary, artistic, musical and dance expression, and
natural resources, of all Indigenous Peoples, including Indigenous women and girls,
Stressing the importance of the empowerment of Indigenous women and girls,
and their full, equal and meaningful participation, as appropriate, in decision-making
processes at the local, national, regional and international levels, and with their free,
prior and informed consent when applicable,
Stressing also the importance of enhancing the participation of Indigenous
Peoples within the United Nations system on issues affecting them,
Recognizing that 5 September is commemorated in several countries as the
International Day of Indigenous Women, in honour of Indigenous women leaders who
have dedicated their lives to the resistance and struggles for the rights of Indigenous
Peoples, to promote awareness of the rights of all Indigenous women and girls, to
uphold their memory, justice, reparation and dignity,

Decides to proclaim 5 September of each year as the International Day of
the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls;

Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the
attention of all States Members of the United Nations, members of the specialized
agencies and observers of the General Assembly, as well as the organizations of the
United Nations system and other relevant stakeholders, for appropriate observance of
the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, in order to raise
awareness of the need to recognize and respect the rights and fundamental freedoms
of all Indigenous women and girls, as set out in the United Nations Declaration on the
Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and to support their pursuit of economic, social and
cultural development;

Stresses that the cost of all activities that may arise from the
implementation of the present resolution should be met by voluntary contributions
and that such activities would be subject to the availability and provision of voluntary
contributions.
